Real-Life Communication

Forensic entomologists need to stick with the facts. They can't speculate or make conclusions based on insufficient evidence. In a courtroom, their work would be attacked. In scientific journals, their work would be discredited.

In each of the following examples, an unreasonable assumption is being made. Explain what assumption is being made. Describe other possible explanations.

  1. The body is badly decomposed, so it must have been in the woods for a long time.
  2. The stage of the maggots shows they've been in the body three weeks. The body must have been in the woods for three weeks.
  3. There were hardly any insects present in the body. The body must be someone murdered very recently.
