Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a closed captioner keying in a long political speech.

You can type 95 words per minute. How many words can you type in 2 hours?

1 hour = 60 minutes
2 hours = 60 minutes x 2
2 hours = 120 minutes

Words per minute:

95 words per minute for 120 minutes:
95 x 120 = 11,400

In 2 hours, you typed 11,400 words.

Unfortunately, you made 600 mistakes. If every misspelled word is subtracted from the total number of words written, what is your actual words per minute over the 2 hours?

11,400 words - 600 mistakes = 10,800 words

Revised words per minute: 10,800 words / 120 minutes = 90 words per minute

You actually typed 90 words per minute.

"We don't have to use math very much on the job," says Darrenougue. "But you may need to use some basic skills."
