Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Your letter might look like this:

Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you for contacting the Hotline regarding your magnolia tree.

After looking at the picture you supplied, I note that the leaves have very little fuzz (called indumentum) on the undersides. This suggests that the tree is either an unselected seedling, or possibly a new cultivar (a cultivated variety of plant).

It could be a greenback magnolia. This plant is unlikely to flower for approximately 20 years. Even then, the blossoms will be small.

If you would like flowers in the near future, I'd suggest replacing this tree with another type of tree. Look for a tree that produces large blossoms and has dark green leaves with plenty of fuzz.

Sincerely,

Your Name
