Real-Life Math -- Solution

Solution:

Definitions:

theta.gif = an acute angle in a right triangle

adj = the side of the triangle adjacent to angle theta.gif

opp = the side of the triangle opposite to angle theta.gif

Tantheta.gif = opp/ adj

Here, theta.gif is the angle where you are standing; adj is the distance from you to the tree; and opp is the height of the tree (let's call it h):

theta.gif = 39o

adj = 51 feet

opp = h

Using a trigonometric table or scientific calculator, we can find:

tan 39o = .8098

Since tan 39o= opp/ adj,

8098 = h/ 51 feet

h = .8098 x 51 feet = 41.2998

Therefore the height of the tree is approximately 41.3 feet.
