Real-Life Communication

John Metzger is a media analyst. He says his goal is "to generate positive press and analyst coverage for our clients' company, products, services and people."

You are a media analyst. You work for a public relations agency. Your job is to pitch clients' stories to the media.

Your client is the owner of a clothing store called Changes. It specializes in second-hand clothing. This store is unique because it is run completely by people who are mentally challenged. All proceeds from the store go toward special education. Also, each employee is paid a wage equal to their non-handicapped peers.

You are asked to write a letter to your local newspaper to generate positive press for your client. You know that the editor likes to publish informal letters that are short and to the point. This editor also has a soft spot for community involvement with the underprivileged.

Metzger says one of the skills a media analyst must have is the "ability to understand how an editor will view a story idea, and 'spin' it accordingly."

Write the letter now.
