Real-Life Math -- Solution
To begin with, you must figure the average feed requirements:
15,000
cubic meters x 5 liters per cubic meter = 75,000 liters of food on a normal
day
Now make the adjustment for the temperature:
-2
C is 12 degrees below 10 C
So the adjustment is 12 x 2 percent =
24 percent
24 percent of 75,000 liters = 75,000 x 0.24 = 18,000
liters
The new total feed amount is:
75,000
+ 18,000 = 93,000 liters of feed
Aquaculturist Jennie Koolstra
says the amount of feed to use is one of many things that fish farmers need
to calculate.
"And we're calculating poundages of fish -- like if
the small fish are 21.7 (fish) to the pound," says Koolstra. "All kinds of
things.
"You have to be good at math," Koolstra adds. "You have to
be able to do fractions, you have to be able to measure."
