Real-Life Math

When they enter a burning building, firefighters depend on bottled air to allow them to breathe.

Knowing how long that air will last is a matter of survival.

Fire captains are usually responsible for keeping track of when their firefighters went into a fire and how long their air will last.

Here's a scenario that is typical of how firefighters use math.

Capt. Jones has 4 firefighters who enter a burning abandoned warehouse to search for any possible vagrants who had reportedly taken up residence.

  • Firefighter 1 went into the building at 12:05 a.m., with 40 cubic feet of air.
  • Firefighter 2 entered at 12:10 with 25 cubic feet of air.
  • Firefighter 3 entered at 12:10 with 20 cubic feet of air.
  • Firefighter 4 went in at 12:15 a.m. with 50 cubic feet of air.

Capt. Jones knows that under extreme conditions such as those of the fire, air will be burned at the rate of 2 cubic feet per minute.

When should the captain begin to call each of the firefighters back out of the building? Remember to allow time for the trip back to safety, which could take up to 2 minutes.
