Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You ask for an extension.

You explain the situation to your boss -- the programmers are having to alter the program as you go, but you and your crew are doing your best to stay on top of the job and will try and complete it as quickly as possible.

"Great!" your boss tells you. "This program is top priority -- take the time you need."

You and your crew continue to work on the new software package, struggling with the challenges of writing instructions for a changing product. A week after the expected deadline, the program is completed and the software is ready to hit the market.

This is the real-life decision made by technical writer Tom Lindsay.

"Writing instructions for an unfinished program might sound crazy to other people, but technical writers, especially those of us working in software, must be willing to adjust to an evolving product," he says.
