Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You move on to someone else.

You understand that the man's responses will be useless if he didn't understand your questions, or if you didn't understand his answers. You don't want to jeopardize the validity of the study by including incorrect data.

Afterwards, you explain the situation to your supervisor and ask if you did the right thing.

"Absolutely," says the supervisor. "We know that many people will not agree to be interviewed and that is not your fault. You did the right thing when you bypassed this person."

"There are many times when the research interviewer must make decisions," says Dottie Oliver. She is a phone center coordinator.

"You might have to decide whether to enter a response as 'I don't know,' or you might have to decide whether a respondent can speak English well enough to understand the questions, or even if the respondent is in good enough health to participate in the interview."
