Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a computer animator working on a film's opening sequence. You need math to figure out font size and imaging. This is what you work out:

  1. The font size is 12 and you want to make it 3/4 bigger. How big do you want the font to be?
    12 x 0.75 = 9
    (3/4 of 12 = 9), so 12 + 9 = 21

You want the font size to become size 21.
  2. You have an image of 400 dpi, and you want to reduce the image's dpi by 30 percent. How many dpi does the new image have?
    30 percent = 0.30
    400 x 0.30 = 120
    (30 percent of 400 is 120), so 400 - 120 = 280

You have reduced the image by 120 dpi, leaving it with 280 dpi.

"You may need math to figure some sizing, and to understand your software, but other than that, it's much more important that you are good with color and have excellent ideas," says Paul.
