Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You close your copy of the Freshwater Fishing Regulations and begin to explain to this camper how he's exceeded his fishing limit.

"You did stay under the regulated numberof fish for each type of fish, but you misinterpreted other aspects of the regulation. The maximum number of fish you can catch in one day is eight, excluding perch. Unfortunately, you brought in nine. You have three trout and six walleye.

"A second problem is the size of the fish you caught. The regulations for trout say that only one trout in a catch can be over 22 inches, but you have two over 22 inches in size. A similar problem exists with your walleye catch. You've caught six fish under 24 inches, but the rule states you can have five walleye under 24 inches in combination with a walleye over 24 inches. In other words, a person is only allowed five walleye per day under 24 inches."

You give the camper the citation and advise him to read the rules more carefully in the future.

"It's unfortunate, but a lot of people don't take fishing rules as literally as they should," says conservation officer Duncan Douglass.
