Real-Life Math

You breed horses on your farm. To get your name out, and to build a reputation for quality breeding, you take your best specimens to horse shows.

This weekend, a nearby city is hosting a 3-day show. You plan to take Strider, your finest stallion.

Before you go, you need to prepare a budget. Your expected expenses are:

  • Get trailer inspected and registered: $50
  • 1 bag of shavings to go in trailer: $5
  • 1 bale of hay: $8
  • Rental of stall for equipment: $15 per day
  • Rental of stall for horse: $15 per day
  • Motel for yourself: $60 per night
  • There are 10 classes in your division. The cost of entering is $20 per class.
  • Your truck, when it's pulling the horse trailer, gets 12 miles to the gallon of gasoline. The city is 50 miles away and gasoline costs $1.35 per gallon.
  • You expect to spend $40 a day on meals and snacks.

If you'll be at the show for 3 days and 2 nights, what will be your total expenses?
