Real-Life Decision Making

You are an environmental technician. You have been sent out to drill holes in a wetland area so that you can set up a grid to monitor the area. "Lots of times you will be sent out into the field with just a map, and you have to figure out what to do from there," says environmental technician Diane Proudley.

You take the map and your equipment and trudge out across the slightly damp ground. You mark out where the holes should go according to the map. At first, the sequence looks fine, until you begin marking out the last holes. The far corner of the grid passes over a strip of concrete left in the area from a former development.

It will take hours to chip and dig through the concrete. You could move the entire grid over by one foot and save yourself a lot of trouble. But was there a reason your boss wanted the grid exactly where she put it? You can't call back to the office, so you have to decide what to do on your own.

What do you do?
