Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell the patron what type of plant probably caused her rash.

It's tempting to be helpful, but there's such a thing as being too helpful! This is one example. What if you're wrong? What if the cause is something else, something more serious? You could put the patron at risk by giving your personal opinion.

"We cannot diagnose anybody's rash," says library director Chris Taylor. "We can lead them to the books that have the pictures of the rashes, but there are areas where, as a professional librarian, you want people to come and talk to you, you want them to feel like you're their friend, but you can't give friendly advice in areas of legal, medical or financial areas.

"You need to direct them to sources and have an opinion about what's a good source, but there are certain questions that you just can't give them the answer to," Taylor adds. "Even if you know it, it's best not to."
