Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're trying to bring your library up to date, so you need to make a plan.

  1. How much extra shelving will you need?

You need 25 percent more shelving.

    10,500 feet / 0.75 = 14,000 feet

    14,000 feet - 10,500 feet = 3,500 feet

You will need 3,500 more feet of shelving to make the shelves three-quarters full.

  2. How much will the new shelves cost?

    3,500 feet x $20 per foot = $70,000

  3. How much will you have to pay the students to move the books?

    30 students x (20 hours per weekend x 7 weekends x $9 per hour) = $37,800

In total, you will have to pay $37,800 to have students move the books out of the way.

  4. How much will it cost to have students move everything back into place?

    30 students x 150 hours x $9 per hour = $40,500

It will cost another $40,500 to have the students move everything back.

So how much will the renovations cost?

$70,000 + $37,800 + $40,500 = $148,300

It will cost $148,300 to renovate the library.

"Math skills are useful," says librarian Joanna Aegard. "In addition to managing budgets, librarians need to understand statistics.

"Measuring a library's worth is becoming more important in times of financial constraints," Aegard explains. "We are required to report a set of statistics to the government, which include things like program attendance, circulation, visitors (both in person and online), and number and types of questions answered."
