Real-Life Communication

You've been asked to make a short speech to high school students as part of Be a Donor week. The goal of the Association for Organ Donation is to have everyone know the importance of signing a donor card. Organ donation has saved many lives over the years.

Every 16 minutes, another name is added to the organ transplant waiting list.

"It is important to listen, educate and persuade," says transplant surgeon Dr. Todd Demmy.

"One needs to adjust to one's audience and translate medical jargon into language that everyone can understand. Physicians are asked to interact with the media commonly. I have participated in communication classes designed for physicians as recently as last year."

These little items should serve you well in your speech. Remember: you've been given only two minutes to get a pro-donation opinion across. Don't waste time. Good luck!
