Real-Life Math -- Solution

One point equals 1 percent of the target population. The total target population is 150,000. The number of 18- to 24-year-olds watching is 12 points or 12 percent:

150,000 x 0.12 = 18,000

The number of 18- to 24-year-olds watching Buddies is 18,000.

If the entire target population is 150,000 and only half were available to watch at that time, then the total number of people between 18 and 24 available to watch TV was 75,000 people.

Share represents a percentage of the target population who were actually watching Buddies compared to those who were available to watch television at that time. We know there were 18,000 watching. Therefore, the share is the percentage of 75,000:

18,000 / 75,000 x 100 = 24

The 18-to-24 share is 24 percent.
