Real-Life Math

Although it may not always be obvious, math plays an important role in most professions, and orthopedic technology is no exception.

You have to be able to measure the length of materials in order to fit someone properly for a cast. But that's not all!

"Sometimes a doctor wants something put in at a 90-degree or a 45-degree angle, and we have to know our angles to do it correctly," says orthopedic technologist Jane Villadiego.

You've been ordered to set a patient's leg in traction at a 45-degree angle. If this person's leg is 32 inches long, how far off the bed must it be in order to be at a 45-degree angle?

To work this problem, you can use this formula:

Hypotenuse = length of the leg (32 inches)
Opposite = distance between bed and heel
Angle = 45 degrees

Sin (angle) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
