Real-Life Communication -- Solution

A client wants you to create a clay animation of Hard Times. You are beginning with the character Thomas Gradgrind. In order to visualize his character, you have read and reread the opening passages of Hard Times.

These are the answers to the few questions you wanted to answer about his appearance:

  1. Describe Thomas Gradgrind's mouth and voice.

Thomas Gradgrind's mouth is wide, thin and hard set. His voice is inflexible, dry and dictatorial.

  2. What is the predominant geometric shape that you will use to create Thomas Gradgrind? That is, what shape does Dickens constantly use to describe Gradgrind?

Dickens constantly describes Thomas Gradgrind as square. He has a square index finger, square forehead, square coat, square legs and square shoulders.

  3. What does the top of Thomas Gradgrind's head look like?

Thomas Gradgrind's hair bristled on the skirts of his bald head, a plantation of firs to keep the wind from its shining surface, all covered by knobs, like the crust of a plum pie, as if the head had scarcely warehouse-room for the hard facts stored inside.

"Clay animators must be able to see characters in descriptions," says Lemmon. "They are also sometimes called on to write dialog for their characters."
