Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are creating the cartoon character Zippy. You need to calculate how long it will take you to create the 125-frame sequence, as well as how long the film will be.

  1. You create 125 frames at an average of 10 minutes per frame.

    125 x 10 minutes = 1,250 minutes

    Change minutes to hours:

    60 minutes = 1 hour
    Hours = 1,250 / 60
    Hours = 20.83 hours

    It will take you just over 20 hours to create 125 frames.

  2. If one frame equals 0.5 seconds of time, how long will a film of 125 frames take to play?

    0.5 seconds x 125 = 62.5 seconds

    Seconds to minutes:

    60 seconds = 1 minute
    Minutes = 62.5 / 60
    Minutes = 1.04

    The film will run for 1.04 minutes.

Back to the drawing board! Your customer wants a second character added to the commercial. But don't put down your calculator. You'll need to calculate the size of the new character. "Math is also used in the design of sets and armatures," says Lemmon.
