Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You have been asked to make a presentation on how automated garbage trucks work at a public meeting. The City has just switched from a non-automated to an automated garbage collection system. This will change the type of garbage bins residents use. It also changes how and where residents put their bins.

Here's what you could say:

What you see here is one of the new automated garbage trucks. We're really excited to start using them. When we were using the non-automated trucks, we needed to work in teams with one driver and two laborers who picked up the garbage by hand and threw it in the truck. As you can imagine, this is a very physically demanding job and it resulted in many back injuries to garbage collectors. The automated trucks are much safer for workers in garbage collection.
In order to keep refuse collectors like me safe on the job, we need your cooperation. Let me show you how the new trucks work. You can see here that the truck has a mechanical arm. It's used to pick up the bins and is controlled by the driver. The arm can only pick up the bins that have been specially designed for it. The city has given each household a bin, and you must use those bins when you put out your garbage from now on.
When you put out your bin, make sure it is on the curb or at the edge of the street in front of your house. That way the mechanical arm can reach it. The handle of the bin needs to be facing your house. In order for the mechanical arm to have enough room to maneuver, make sure there is nothing around the bin for a space of four feet. That means you shouldn't put it beside your mail box, a telephone pole or your fence.
Now that the bin is in place, let me demonstrate the pickup.

"Good communication and understanding of the materials is essential to a profitable business," says Greg Davis. He is the founder of Garbageman.com, a private garbage collection, recycling and demolition company based in Miami Beach, FL.
