Additional Information

There is no formal education required to be a professional surfer. Most aspiring surfers learn the sport on their own or with the help of a coach or mentor. But surfing schools are springing up around North America.

Because public appearances and public relations are a big part of being a professional surfer, having a polished image and the ability to speak in public are important. Professional surfers say staying in school and getting the best education possible are key to being successful both during and after a career as a surfer.

And since most surfers only compete for 10 years or less, having a solid educational foundation will allow them to pursue careers as coaches, broadcast announcers or promoters -- all careers that keep them close to the sport they love.
