Additional Information
While there are no specific programs or degrees required for a career as
an executive assistant, it is recommended that those interested in this career
get some kind of post-secondary degree.
"If you are interested in a particular industry like cooking, publishing,
math, education or medicine, get experience or more education in that field,"
says Mary Fisher. She works as an administrative assistant. "[Education] makes
you much more valuable, and you can understand the job from its industry standpoint."
Many executive assistants also recommend students take courses in areas
such as accounting, finance, business administration, as well as computing
courses that focus on the Microsoft Office suite. Skills in communications
and public relations can help executive assistants advance in their career.
Some executive assistants have educational backgrounds in office administration
or management.
"I would also recommend five years or so of secretarial experience prior
to attempting an executive-level position," says Debbie Shumans. Shumans is
an executive secretary in Savannah, Georgia.
