The ACL. The initials stand for anterior cruciate ligament, a sinewy strip of muscle-like substance that helps the knee flex and straighten. The injury is famous for the "pop" sound it makes when the ACL is torn. And the noise has meant the end of many an athletic career.

When a 10th-grade cross-country runner hears the pop during a meet, the team doctor asks you to help. Since you work with high school students more often, he's hoping you can explain the injury better. He wants to make sure she understands several key points:

  • The ACL is crucial to the functioning of the knee in athletic situations.
  • Without its support functions, the leg will virtually collapse with each step.
  • Hundreds of athletes have undergone reconstructive surgery to their ACLs.
  • The surgery has a high rate of success and lasts a lifetime unless the injury recurs.
  • Surgery isn't necessary in order to lead a normal life.
  • But it will be nearly impossible for the runner to continue her athletic career without it.
  • Recovery time is six to 10 weeks before light running can be resumed.
  • She'd miss the current season, but be ready in plenty of time for next year.

Write a 250-word note that explains the injury to your 10th grader.
