Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You shut off the drill and get blowout preventers in place.

You can always resume drilling if it's just water filling the hole. Also, you and the crew can calculate the amount of hydrostatic pressure you need to generate to drill safely if it's petroleum seeping into the hole.

Chenoweth says drilling schools and companies alike stress safety. He adds that while a company is paying tens of thousands of dollars a day to lease an oil derrick, an explosion and its subsequent fire would cost considerably more, not to mention the possible cost of human lives.

According to Chenoweth, a good crew will typically have the drill running again, with proper pressures to prevent a dreaded kick, in less than 12 hours.
