Real-Life Math -- Solution

You have drilled to about 2,110.5 feet. You know from counting the remaining joints that you have 83. By subtracting 83 from 150, you know that 67 are in the hole.

While drill joints come in different lengths, they average about 31.5 feet. By multiplying 31.5 by 67, you get 2,110.5.

The geologist wanted a sample at 3,500 feet. You have about another 1,389.5 feet to go. If you divide 1,389.5 by 31.5, the average length of a joint, you get 44.11. Now you know that you'll add about 44 drill joints before you change to the core bit.

Gibson says sometimes an oil formation you're drilling for might be only 6 feet tall, though much wider. Absolute accuracy is a must. He said it's possible to drill straight through your target if you're not keeping accurate records.
