Real-Life Decision Making

"I found the hardest part of going into this field, as a beginner, was having to make judgment calls," says Michael Alberts. He is an aircraft inspector.

Based on the information you have about an airplane, you must make decisions that could have serious consequences. "You're the final say on whether the plane flies or not," says Alberts. This is a tremendous responsibility.

You maintain a small fleet of lightweight aircrafts for XYZ Flight Center. One Cessna is scheduled for a trip to Niagara Falls. A client booked it and paid in full over a month ago. This trip is going to be an anniversary surprise for his wife.

Hours before the client is supposed to arrive, you are performing a routine check and discover there is a crack in the muffler of the plane. On lightweight aircraft such as Cessnas, the muffler is used as a source of heat in the cabin.

The crack is relatively small. But there is a chance that carbon monoxide could leak into the cabin.

What do you do?
