Real-Life Decision Making

You're a drilling engineer at a large petroleum-producing company. You're working under a tight deadline to get a new well in the ground. The exploration team has been working for some time. Management has stressed that by this afternoon, they'd like to know exactly where the drill is going to be set.

As the drilling engineer, this is your area of expertise. You've looked over the results of the studies so far and have come up with a solid idea of where the drill should be set.

Normally, you would run your decision by other members of the engineering team to make sure they agree and don't find any problems. "Decision making is becoming more and more of a team concept," says Jennifer Wilding. She is a petroleum engineer.

But time is an issue here. You simply don't have time to consult your fellow workers and meet with management by this afternoon with a solid proposal.

To you, the issue of where to place the well looks like a simple decision. Do you really need to meet with your co-workers before the meeting?

What do you do?
