Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You plant ivy.

This may seem like a logical option because the plant is cheap and grows quickly. But in a formal garden, you may not want plants to grow too fast.

"It all depends on the format of the garden," says Trish Fielkowich, a landscape contractor. "Ivy might be a good choice for a wild garden, but it has to be pruned so often to keep it in place."

If you plant ivy, it will initially be cheaper for Marge. But in the long run, it could end up costing her much more than the boxwood hedge. She would have to do the work herself, or hire a garden crew to come in every two weeks to trim the ivy.

"You have to think about maintenance costs and the pruning that needs to be done. It can add up quickly," says Fielkowich.

Marge would rather spend her time working on the house. She wants a maintenance-free garden. You might want to reconsider and suggest planting something slow-growing like a boxwood or barberry.
