Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You plant boxwood.

This is the real-life decision that landscape contractor Trish Fielkowich would make in a similar situation.

"At the outset, it will be more expensive," says Fielkowich. "But if you think of the maintenance costs of trimming ivy, boxwood would be cheaper in the long run."

She says that ivy may need to be trimmed every two weeks to keep it from trailing over the stone planters in a formal garden.

"It may seem like a little decision, but it's important. If you plant something that is too hard for the client to manage, you've made a bad choice. The maintenance is something they will have to deal with for a long time to come."

Boxwood is a good choice for Marge, who wants a formal looking garden and wants to expend very little time looking after it. Maintenance fees for the hedge will be minimal because it grows so slowly.
