You're a therapeutic dietitian working for a small community hospital. When a patient is recuperating in the hospital, you're the one responsible for figuring out what that person's calorie intake should be and what the patient should be eating. You have to take into consideration the patient's stress level, activity level and weight level.

A patient may need 25 to 30 percent more calories if they are active or under stress. The patient may require fewer calories if they are trying to lose weight.

Today you're calculating the calories required by a newly admitted 45-year-old male patient. He weighs 154 pounds (70 kilograms), is 6'1" tall (185 centimeters), and is very active.

You use the basal energy expenditure formula for men to figure out the number of calories required.

Basal Energy Expenditure Formula:

Calories = 66.5 + (13.8 x weight in kg) + (5 x height in cm) - (6.8 x age)

Find out how may calories the patient requires.
