Real-Life Communication -- Solution

The story of the good Samaritan takes place long ago on a road from Jerusalem into Jericho. However, the story has relevance in our lives today. For Madeleine, it shows that it is best for her to show mercy upon the stranger in her house because he has no one else to help him.

This is how you might have answered the questions posed to you:

  1. After reading this story, do you think Jesus wants people to ask the question, "How difficult will it be for me to help someone?" or ask the question, "What will happen to this person if I don't help them?" Explain.

Jesus wants people to ask the question, "What will happen to this person if I don't help them?" This is exemplified in the story.

The first two men who pass by the man may be in a hurry. They may have places to go and people to see. They may feel it's not their responsibility to take care of someone they don't even know. The man lying at the side of the road could be anyone -- there's no guarantee the wounded man could even repay them if they did stop to help.

But the hero of this story is the Samaritan who inconveniences himself to help a stranger. He is the person who showed mercy and thought of the needy man rather than himself.

  2. Imagine that a woman flags down your car at the side of the freeway because she has a flat tire. What might be a reason that you wouldn't stop? What might be a reason that you would stop?

You may choose not to stop for any number of reasons that concern yourself. You may think you don't have time to stop or you may think that someone else will help her.

You may decide to stop because you see that the woman is in need of assistance.
