Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're dealing with the mathematical trials and tribulations of running a parish.

Part A

The sanctuary of your church currently holds 600 adults. On average, you've been having 450 people attend. Over the years the congregation has been increasing by 10 percent per year. You want to know how many years you have until the congregation outgrows the church:

One year:
450 x 0.10 = 45 people
45 + 450 = 495 people

Two years:
495 x 0.10 = 49.5 people
495 + 49.5 = 544.5 people

Three years:
544.5 x 0.10 = 54.5 people
544.5 + 54.5 = 599 people

Four years:
599 x 0.10 = 59.9 people
599 + 59.9 = 659 people

It will take 4 years for the congregation to outgrow the church. You decide to present your rough calculation of the growth to the church committee this afternoon. It's time to start discussing adding more seats or an addition to the church.

Part B

You've decided that your 1st church outing of the summer will be a watermelon seed spitting contest and an ice cream social at the park on the edge of town. These are the items needed for the outing:

  • 5 watermelons at $2.49 each: 5 x 2.49 = $12.45
  • 12 boxes of cones for $1.89 each: 12 x 1.89 = $22.68
  • 4 tubs of ice cream at $14 each: 4 x $14 = $56
  • 1 package of napkins at $1.25
  • Gas for the bus is $15
  • And $10 for extras you may have forgotten

$12.45 + $22.68 + $56 + $1.25 + $15 + $10 = $117.38

You are going to suggest that the committee spend $117.38 on the outing.
