Real-Life Communication
You've recently turned your beekeeping hobby into a full-time business.
Your business, the Honeybee Mine, has hundreds of colonies. You also employ
a couple of assistants.
There are two grocery stores in your town.
You want to convince the owner of one of them, Mrs. Klatzel, to stock your
honey. Currently, neither store stocks locally produced honey.
You
want to mention the following points:
- She'll be helping support local employment.
- Honey has a healthy image.
- People like to buy locally produced goods.
- Her competitor, Apple Foodmart, doesn't stock locally produced honey,
so she'll be setting herself apart.
In their eagerness to sell, some beekeepers make questionable claims
about the benefits of honey. Make sure you don't do the same.
"You
have to be pretty careful when you're attributing qualities to the honey,
because you're running, sometimes, pretty close to the edge of the truth,"
says beekeeper Kenn Tuckey. "Scientifically, it's no different from a solution
of sugar, but there are things in it that may or may not help you with local
pollen allergies and stuff like that."
Write down what you'll say to
Mrs. Klatzel. Try to be convincing without stretching the truth.
