Real-Life Communication -- Solution

It is important to be able to accept feedback and react to it positively. Dancing is an art form and people have very different and personal opinions about art. You don't want to get disheartened or lose confidence. You will need heart and confidence to dance your best!

Stay calm, breathe deeply and try to decide where the criticism is coming from. The director has a lot more experience in the industry than you do and her opinion should be valued. All of your experiences as a dancer will help you to grow and improve.

Here's what you could say to the director::

I would like to thank you for your constructive criticism yesterday. It really helped me to understand your vision for this performance. I have thought a lot about what you said. I think I know how I can alter my style so that it works in this production. I understand what you are asking of me and I think that I can target these things during practice to deliver for you. Would it be possible for me to spend some extra time with you or one of the senior dancers to iron out the changes I am going to be making?

"Communication gets dancers work," says Jennifer Abbey. She is a professional commercial dancer. "With this industry, it's all about who you know. The more you keep communication with everyone, the easier it is for them to be reminded that you exist and are available to work."
