Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You run the story in the next available issue.

The story is run in the following Saturday's edition. The paper actually comes out around 11 p.m. on Friday. It is then distributed to resellers and paperboys and girls.

By 10:30 Saturday morning, Mrs. Calhoun's lawyers are in your office. Aside from the lawsuit you expected, the company is severing all its ties with the paper. In fact, they are so upset they have even refused to honor their advertising contract, which stipulates that they buy four full-page ads per month for a whole year.

The paper's owners are furious at losing an advertising contract worth $40,000 per year. They also aren't too pleased at having to fight a libel suit in the courts.

Editor John Arendt knows about tough decisions. "Editors must manage people and information. They must be able to work well under pressure. Crisis situations and big stories can happen on a production day, when there's little time to ponder them. It's important for editors to be able to think on their feet, think creatively and make snap decisions."
