You need to move one of your patients from a medical ward to another area of the hospital for tests. She is receiving oxygen through a tube in her nose. This is delivered by a device plugged into the wall. It is supplied by the central oxygen source for the hospital.

In order to get her to the test, you need to move the oxygen tube from the wall source to the oxygen cylinder. But you have to ensure the cylinder doesn't run out!

You use the following equation to find out how long the cylinder of oxygen will last. It's called the cylinder flow time.

Time = (Pcyl x CF) / Flow


  1. Pcyl is the pressure in the cylinder in pounds per square inch (psi)
  2. CF is the conversion factor for the size of the cylinder used
  3. Flow is the flow required for the patient in liters per minute (L/min)

Your patient will be using an E-size cylinder. The conversion factor is 0.28 liters psi. The patient requires an oxygen gas flow of 8 liters per minute. You expect to be gone with the patient for one hour. The E cylinder you have for the patient has 1,350 psi. Will you have enough oxygen to complete the test?
