Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're a forest technician scouting the conditions of a recreation trail. You're on a tight schedule and must use all your outdoor and mathematical savvy to get back to the ranger station on time.

Use the equations:

1) Distance = Rate x Time

2) Rate = Distance/Time

Travel time from the ranger station to the mid-way rest point = 12:45 -11:00 = 1 hour 45 minutes = 1.75 hour

Distance traveled: D = Rate xTime

D = 1.5 miles/hr x 1.75 hr

D = 2.62 miles

Distance remaining (from the mid-way rest point to the lookout point):

= (7 - 2.62) miles

= 4.38 miles

Rate at which distance must be traveled:

Rate = Distance/Time

R = 4.38 miles / 1.25 hr

R = 3.5 miles per hour

You must travel 3.5 miles per hour to make it to the lookout point by 2:00 p.m.
