Real-Life Communication

Just like an actor or an artist, most of the communicating a novelist does is in the work itself. A novelist wants to convey a sense of what it's like to be in a certain situation at a certain time. The characters must be engaging, interesting and believable. Events must lead the story where it has to go. And the voice the author uses must not sound fake or forced.

See if you can write a short story about something that happened to you or someone you know. Invent characters with personalities and make them interact in a believable way. Try to write in a voice that comes naturally to you, or try writing as if someone completely different from yourself is telling the story.
