Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to pass on the offer.

This is the real-life decision made by Sonia Craddock. Four years ago, she was offered a job teaching children's literature in the education department of a college. It was a tempting offer, but Craddock knew from previous experience what she had to do.

"I've lost out in monetary terms," she says, referring to the fact that she doesn't make as much money writing as she would by teaching full time (even though she has been successful by writers' standards).

Nevertheless, that's better than the alternative, as far as she's concerned. Working full time, she says, would have brought on "extreme tension and stress, because I wouldn't be doing what I wanted to do."

Sure, she admits that meeting the mortgage can be stressful without a full-time job to bring in more money, but Craddock is happy with working part time and making writing her main pursuit.
