Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are casting extras for a comic scene in a film, and want to get an estimate of how much it will cost to cast the scene as you think best.

You pay each extra $110 for the day.

Number of extras (not including circus performers):
4 people in horse costume
25 people on horseback
1 bartender

Total = 30 people

30 x $110 = $3,300
Extras fees: $3,300

Circus performers
Number = 3
Fee = 25 percent more than $110
0.25 x $110 = $27.50

Each circus performer gets paid an additional $27.50.

$27.50 + $110 = $137.50
3 x $137.50 = $412.50

Circus performers fees: $412.50

The horse costumes will cost $75 each.
2 horse costumes = 2 x $75
Costumes cost = $150

Real horses: $80 each
25 horses x $80 = $2,000
Horse cost = $2,000

Bartending outfit = $30

Total = $3,300 + $412.50 + $150 + $2,000 + $30

Total= $5,892.50

The total bill is a whopping $5,892.50. You might want to reconsider how many people you cast for the scene. "Most of the math used is for sensible business calculations," says Gaze.
