Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You refer the man to someone else within your company who is qualified to address the problem.

After trying to calm and help the farmer yourself, you respond to his persistent demands by telling him that your boss is in a meeting. If he still wishes to see your boss, he'll have to make an appointment to do so at another time.

Then you suggest the name of someone else in your company -- perhaps the head of public relations -- who could possibly address his concern.

This is the real-life decision made by Marilyn Halsall. "The key to knowing what decisions to make depends upon developing a good relationship with your boss. If you can get to know your boss well and understand how he thinks, then you'll know how he wants you to handle certain situations," explains Halsall.

"But a general rule to remember is don't bother your boss with something that you can handle, one way or another, by yourself."
