You've been trying to sell your photographs to magazines for a while now, with no luck. You've gotten some encouraging letters back from editors, so you keep trying.

Then, one day, you hit the jackpot. You think. You get a letter from the editor of a large national magazine to whom you submitted some photos of a house that got struck by lightning. The editor says that he'd be interested in running one of the photos in a story they have coming out soon. However, there are a few conditions.

Firstly, he would like you to go back and retake the shot with a slightly larger depth of field. Secondly, he would like you to take a couple of different shots with varying degrees of backlighting. Finally, he is requesting serial rights.

You were always told that you should know a bit about the business side of things before approaching magazines. Now you understand why.

Find out what the terms "depth of field," "backlighting" and "serial rights" mean. Then describe each term as clearly as possible, as if you were explaining the terms to a new assistant.
