Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide not to call.

Other news sources may be quoting the husband, but that's different than asking him to do a radio interview. You worry that listeners will feel the interview is taking advantage of a grieving man in shock.

The show goes on without the additional interview. It's good, but the next morning you see the husband of one of the victims being interviewed on CNN. It is a brilliant interview. The man is articulate and compelling in his arguments for change. You feel you've missed a wonderful opportunity.

It's possible to make the tough calls without taking advantage of people, says independent radio producer Sean Cole.

"People are rightly skeptical about the media and reporters," says Cole. "They're jaded and think we're jackals, and I think that's [often] an appropriate position to hold."
