Real-Life Decision Making

CMAs pride themselves on their management abilities. Like all managers, they're frequently forced to make decisions about people's jobs.

You work as the controller for a printing company. You are also the office manager. The company has not been doing well lately.

The owners have decided they're going to have to let go of some people. The staff is not to be told until the day of the layoffs. Two weeks in advance, however, you have been told which people will be laid off.

One of them is your assistant, who is also a friend. Over lunch one day, she tells you that she and her husband have just taken out a loan to buy a house. You feel really torn and guilty. You know your friend is counting on her salary to help pay back the loan.

You are now faced with a decision. Should you tell your friend about the impending layoffs? Or should you keep quiet? What would you do?
