Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's the corrected cover letter, with the corrections highlighted.

Dear Ms. Tidwell:

I am responding to your advertisement in the Baltimore Times of Oct. 12 for the entry-level position of bookkeeper. As my resume indicates, I appear to fit the candidate description as outlined in your advertisement. I have a strong interest in the position and I believe my background, qualifications and work experience are well-suited to your company's requirements.

I received my bachelor of accounting from Astute College last month. In addition, I have worked as a summer intern with several businesses in the Baltimore area during the past four years.

Please accept my enclosed resume in consideration for this position. I will contact you the first week of November to find out if we can arrange an interview.

Thank you for your time. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Sally Smith

"You do not want any errors," says Carolyn Carson. She's director of placement for a college. "The resume [and cover letter] is usually the first thing that an employer sees. You have to have good communication skills."

Besides talking with clients, Carson meets with business people to learn about their hiring needs. She says it's important to have "good overall written and oral communication skills."

People in this field help clients create error-free resumes and cover letters. And they listen carefully to each client to learn about their skills, experience and career aspirations.

Eric Ritskes has to speak well because he gives a lot of interviews. He's an employment officer.

"Our office deals a lot with the media," he says. "Written skills are a very important aspect of it as well. We do a lot of promo events and press releases just to generate attention towards our office."
