Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You encourage him to keep trying.

Persistence is good, but unrealistic expectations aren't. Adam doesn't have enough work experience or education for the job he wants.

He's only going to get even more discouraged if he keeps sending resumes out. You need to encourage him to apply for entry-level jobs. Then he can work his way up to that dream job.

Employment counselor Mike Anderson says it's important "to be able to help the client realize their own skills. If the client wants to be a doctor but they don't have Grade 12, obviously that's not going to happen."

Here's what employment officer Eric Ritskes does in these kinds of situations: "We find a lot of people say, 'Man, I've sent out all these resumes, but I haven't got a single call back.' So, I'll sit down and see where they've been applying. I'll say, 'Here's a couple places that are hiring that might better suit your work experience.'"
