Real-Life Math -- Solution

  1. Happyland's total population was about 1 million in 2001. What percentage of its population was Hispanic?

Hispanic percentage = Hispanic population / total population x 100
    Hispanic percentage = 111,245 / 1,000,000 x 100
    Hispanic percentage = 11

Happyland's Hispanic population was about 11 percent of the total population.

  2. How many Hispanics were under the age of 20?

    Under age 20 = total Hispanics x 0.5
    Under age 20 = 111,245 x 0.5
    Under age 20 = 55,623

About 55,623 Hispanics were under the age of 20.

  3. By what percentage did the youth population in Happyland decrease from 1984 to 1997?

    Percentage drop = (1984 population - 1997 population) / 1984 population x 100
    Percentage drop = (183,000 - 135,000) / 183,000 x 100
    Percentage drop = 48,000 / 183,000 x 100
    Percentage drop = 26

The youth population fell by about 26 percent between 1984 and 1997.

  4. By what percentage did the youth population increase between 1997 and 2004?

    Percentage increase = (2004 population - 1997 population) / 1997 population x 100
    Percentage increase = (142,000 - 135,000) / 135,000 x 100
    Percentage increase = 7,000 / 135,000 x 100
    Percentage increase = 5

The youth population increased by about 5 percent between 1997 and 2004.

Employment and placement specialists need to understand basic statistics. However, you don't need to be a math genius.

"Math is not really a big part of what we do," says Eric Ritskes, an employment officer. "It's generally being able to read labor market information and sort of assess that and see how it fits into how you're helping the students."

Janet Lenz runs a university career center. She says math is used "a minimal amount, in terms of budgeting issues." Also, she says you might do some basic budgeting if your agency applies for government grants.

One more way you might use math is to track your placement rates. You want to see how successful you are in finding work for people.
