Real-Life Communication

Communication is a big part of what human resources managers do. "Part of our job involves communicating an understanding of an issue or conflict without conveying agreement," says Marlise McCammon, an HR manager. "It's a fine line for most people. You have to be able to say, 'Yes I see your point,' without saying, 'You're absolutely right.' Often you'll need more information before you can decide if what the person is saying is right or wrong."

Human resources managers say dealing with unhappy employees is one of their least favorite parts of the job.

Pretend you are dealing with an employee who is angry because a co-worker got a promotion he was hoping for. The choice was yours and you made your decision based on the fact that the successful applicant had more education and more computer skills. You also feel the winning candidate is more of a team player than this employee.

Write down what you would say to explain this to the employee. Remember, you want to remain on good terms with him. He still works for the company and you want to avoid any further resentment.
