Real-Life Math

It might seem that being a housecleaner is one of those jobs where you can finally get away from doing math. But think again.

Whether you work for yourself or for someone else's business, the work has to be profitable. Your speed, the size of the rooms you clean and the amount of cleaning supplies you use will all affect profits.

William Dalgleish owns a cleaning company. "Math and communication skills are very important, as is the realization that one person cannot be expert in everything," he says.

Your goal is to earn $1,500 per month (before taxes).

  1. You can clean 1 home with 2,000 square feet every 2 hours and 1 home with 1,200 square feet every hour and a half.
  2. You charge $70 to clean 2,000 square feet and $50 to clean 1,200 square feet.
  3. Cleaning supplies cost you $60 per month.
  4. You have 4 clients with 2,000 square feet and 10 with 1,200 square feet who pay you to clean their homes twice per month.

Can you reach your earnings goal based on these figures? How many hours will you have to work to make $1,500 before taxes?
